Why does your team not think like you think, do what you do and believe what you believe?

The quickest way to fix that is to teach your team to think like you.  Then they can take their unique gifting, apply it to how they think and optimize your results.

In 2008 I returned from Dave Ramsey’s EntreLeadership Master Series.  26 lessons that Dave Ramsey says are 20 years of practical business wisdom from the trenches.

By this time I understood that with 14 locations and 146 team members shifting our culture from a mess that took 15 years to create into a culture centered around practical wisdom would take turtle time.

How can you swift your teams thinking overnight?  You create an event.

Do you have time to create an event?  No.

Can you take your team to an event?  Yes

All I can do is tell you what worked for us.  Taking 28 team members to the next EntreLeadership events worked.  They learned from Dave directly, came together as a team and overnight learned what I knew.  They started to think like a business owner.

The power of sending the team to EntreLeadership was showing the team instead of telling them.  Teaching your team what you learned is good.  Showing them is best.

After the team returned success still was a process not an event.  Turtle time ticked on.  Day after the day the team and I worked to carry out “20 years of practical business wisdom from the trenches.”

The team is still walking.  I am right there besides them.  Success is with us.

Toastmasters isn’t about making speeches, making toasts or cooking bread.   It’s time that can get you what you want.

When you speak do you want people to listen, admire and thank you?   Do you want to have world-class speaking and leadership skills?  When your called on to speak to your team, groups or in public do your knees shake?  Mine did.

In 2009 I noticed that I needed improvement to survive, stabilize and succeed.

During the National Speakers Association Conference I re-discovered the power of Using Twitter.  As the conference began I decided to tweet out thoughts, ideas and small steps for action.  This decision led to a connection to presenter Julie Morgenstern.   She gave me a gift that can help you survive, stabilize and succeed as you focus what’s important to you.

What is your Twitter strategy?  Do you use Twitter for taking notes, sharing and connecting?

#1.  POWER in taking notes.  The act of typing thoughts, ideas and small steps for action can lock in the information to your long-term memory.  You want to expose yourself to what you want to remember in an hour, day and week.  Where can you find your notes easily, have fun and meet powerful connections?  Twitter.

#2.  POWER in reviewing your notes:  By tweeting your thoughts, ideas and small steps for action you give yourself a place to check your information.  Your Tweeter friends can share your information.  You’re too busy to check Twitter?  You don’t have to.  You can set your Twitter account to email you when your friends share your information.

#3.  POWER in connecting:  Do you know it all?   No.  Twitter can help you connect with people who know something you don’t.   If you said yes then use the comment section to tell what you know.

#4.  POWER in small action steps:  Do you know that having small steps for action can help you survive, stabilize and succeed?  When you Tweet you get 140 characters to make your point.  You need to speak, write and communicate in sound bites.  You can like it or lump it.  Sound bites work.

#5.  Power in giving gifts:  How can you connect with a person that has published 5 books, been on Oprah 9 times and has a wealth of knowledge?    Sometime after her presentation Julie Morgenstern reviewed her “Twitter @ mentions”.  Dale Carnegie said that the sweetest sound is the sound of your own name.  Julie uses the Twitter name @JulieMorgenstrn.  When Julie found out I tweeted during her talk she sent the following gift to @77Dale ‘s in box.

“Good progress on the Sound bites!

Your blog post that includes the 10.75 List has wonderful headers –i.e. “Get Yourself a Yellow pad”.

Your list today of 3 tips is excellent but the sound bites would be better if you didn’t repeat the word “Have” 3x.

Instead, maybe something like …

#1.  Have a team in place.

How can you use your super POWERS today?

The 3 questions to win a heated discussion with an impossible person are …

#1.  Ask “How do you know that?”

Wait for the pause, stutter or dumbfounded look.

#2.  “Who told you that?”

Wait.  Notice the frustration building in the other person?

#3.   “Can you prove it?”

Be ready for an attack on your character, the impossible person walking off or an adult throwing a four-year old tantrum.

Gentle reminder:  These questions are for impossible people.  They are NOT for your wife.   Men, your wife can ask these of you.  Don’t argue with her if you can’t answer the questions.

Have fun watching your impossible person huff, puff and get red in the face.   When they storm off you’ve gained time.   Take the time to impact the important people in your life.

My family returned yesterday from the National Speakers Association Influence11 conference.   Now they all want to go back to Cali.   Have you ever wanted to go out-of-town?   Do you own your business or does your business own you?



What can I do to return to Cali?   What can you do that makes your business survive, stable and successful while you are gone?



3 tips to succeed when leaving your business while you’re out-of-town.



#1.  Have a team in place:  I could not have success without the team.   Learn how to delegate, empower and follow-up.   You can leave for time away.  Time to develop a new business.  Time for your family.



#2.  Create a list of what you need to do while you are gone:   You can write what you need to carry out each day.   Look at your list.   What do you need to do today?   What do you not need to do today yet causes you to carry out your plan?



#3.  Develop a plan:  Are you flexible?   Work your plan than react to how your plan plays out.  Do you believe in finishing what you start?   If yes, I do to.  if you’re living your passion, you see why you’re doing what you do and you’re making progress then it’s only a matter of time.   Stay faithful.



Now, are you doing all the above?    If you hate what you’re doing, if you have NO reason to believe you’ll win in the end or if you’re seeing NO progress then QUIT now.

The speaker business is easy to get into, although tough to make money in and even tougher to stay in. Spending five days at the National Speakers Associations Influence11 Conference was smart.

Paying the bill, enduring the stress and aggravation of travel was smart.

Here, I share what I have learned, free:



The top 10.75 actions you need to take to get paid to speak:



#1. Delusional value:  Add so much value that leaders, teams and people think you are delusional. Water the Bamboo man says, “A genius is a delusional, crazy person whose ideas work.”

#2. Find one client: Just one. Read action #1. DO that. The trend noticed at NSA11 was that every successful speaker/business model started with one client!!! They all get paid more, now, than they did when they started. You can potentially earn $20,000 per keynote speaker engagement. If you’re new you don’t need to feel the pressure to charge that. For me, that freed me to think how to carry out “Success Steps”. That is, the small next one or two steps needed.

#3. Speak often:  You become a better speaker when you speak more often.

#4. Write daily:  Write so much that you’re discovered. Jeffrey Gitomer says someone will notice you if you speak AWESOME, you are a writer, and any book is a good start for your first book. You’ll get better as you go.

#5. Build Video:  Streamit video home of the Gummi Green Frog candy is the place to start. Blast videos out to your network. See what content works. Start charging for what works. Don’t let people download or own your video. Google Streamit. They’ll tell you.

#6. Meet some people:  Not the online types, the REAL human kind. Begin to ask people, “Who do you know that might hire someone who does what I do?” When they ask what you do, hand them a one-sheet of what you do. Deep breathe. Ask, “Would you pay for this? Do you see any value in this for you? For anyone?” When they say, ”No,” then revise the one-sheet and repeat. Once you find people who brutally tell you, “no,” then switch to, “Yes, I will pay you,” then you know you have found something.

#7. Up Klout: Google Klout. Do you have any? To get paid to speak you need to know real people, have Klout in social media, and have business common sense. It’s not one or the other. AND means you’ll have abundance. OR means you’ll have limitation, competition and fail.

#8. Study, become a PhD. of getting paid to speak:  You will become the books you read, the people you hang out with and the mp3′s you listen to. Are you a golfer? Energy, time and $$$$$ spending seven hours golfing per week is a handicap.

#9. Get yourself a yellow pad:  Begin to practice your material on your yellow pad. Make charts, graphs and pictures. If anyone at all is paying attention, then tear out that sheet and give it to them. If you’re new at getting paid to speak, then make a copy first. Because if someone is actually paying attention to your yellow pad idea you’re on your way to getting paid to speak.

#10. The OODA loop: (for observe, orient, decide, and act) is a concept originally applied to the combat operations process, often at the strategic level in military operations. It is now available for your use. Life is like dessert storm; grab a spoon; get some chocolate sauce and switch tactics when needed. The faster the loop, the faster you get paid to speak. That said, avoid years like the year I lost one million dollars. You’ll need to use discernment to know when too fast needs to slow down.

#10.75 What’s your niche? Focus each day on dialing in your niche.
